The Salem Keizer School District is well known for its outstanding music programs, which draw wide parental support. Their quality is achieved through exemplary instruction by music specialists in all K-12 schools and is a major source of community pride. Music students, to reach their highest potential, need access to personalized instruction specific to their voice or instrument, which is difficult to achieve in a large ensemble class. A student’s family most often provides the financial support for supplemental private lessons. Presently, an equity gap exists between students at schools where many families have resources to pay for personalized instruction and students at schools where most families do not have resources to dedicate for personalized instruction.
